But what causes this dripping? And how is it that so many trees (oaks, maples, birches, tulips trees, ash trees, and so on) seem to have this same problem?
This incessant dripping is a sure sign of an aphid infestation.
Aphids are a sucking pest, like scales and mites. They are small insects, usually 1/8 inch or less in size, with long legs and antennae; they are usually wingless and their color can vary from green, pink, yellow, tan, gray, white or black.
Aphids have an extremely high rate of reproduction, which enables their numbers to build up very rapidly. When aphid numbers are high, trees are stressed and therefore less vigorous. Aphids damage trees and plants by piercing the leaves, stems and flowers and sucking sap and other fluids, weakening plants and leaving them discolored and stunted. Foliage may look puckered or distorted. .
As aphids feed they often transmit viruses which can seriously weaken or even kill a tree. Aphids consume an excess of sap to satisfy their nutritional requirements. The excess is expelled as honeydew out of the recta of aphids in such large volumes that it can fall abundantly.
