Your plants will only experience problems when new aphid colonies are formed in your region. This usually happens when Aphid colonies become overcrowded and the males grow wings and go and look for other less populated ‘territories’.

For many years it has been widely believed that Aphids only attack rose bushes but that is not the case. Whether this is because they adapted their natural feeding environment is not known, but the fact is that Aphids will attach just about any type of plant with soft and tender parts, flowers or growing parts that they can pierce to suck out the sap.

Your plants will only experience problems when new aphid colonies are formed in your region. This usually happens when Aphid colonies become overcrowded and the males grow wings and go and look for other less populated ‘territories’. It is impossible to predict when this happens so in terms of prevention there is no specific time to look out for them. Spring and summer is the season when they are most active but their appearance on your plants may not be limited to the warmer seasons.

What are Aphids?

Aphids are common garden pests that form up to several colonies on a single plant. They are tiny, soft-bodied, pear-shaped insects that have long antennae and a characteristic pair of cornicles (short tubes) extending on either side of their abdomen. Their translucent bodies are most usually green, red, brown, yellow or white.

Where do they feed?

As I mentioned earlier, Aphids today feed on just about any plant. They will form colonies underneath leaves, the tips of branches, around growth points and even on soft and tender bark. Aphids pierce the stems, bark or leaves to get to the sap so they will almost always be on the soft places of the plant. If you notice spotty and yellow discoloration on the leaves of your plants then it is more than likely becauso of this common garden pest. By turning the leaves over you will quickly be able to recognize them.

How can I prevent it?

There are a few tips that I will give you on what you can possibly do to prevent Aphids in your garden. It will not always work and even when you have a healthy, great looking garden, these little creatures can become a pest. When that happens, it is always best to consult a professional.

The first thing you can do is to make sure that your plants are healthy and eating well. This means giving them prescribed plant food, feeding their soil with the correct types of compost and fertilizer. If you do not know what the best types of soils and fertilizers for your plants are, contact us as we can both advise and supply you with what you need.

Try not to have trees, flowers and other plants in your garden with yellow colors. Aphids are extremely attracted to yellow and will give preference to plants with this color.

Embed old CD’s, pieces from a broken mirror or even tinfoil in the soil around the base of your plant. This somehow works quite well.

Stick yellow double-sided tape around the base of your plants. As this is their color of choice, they will be attracted to this first, allowing you to catch them before they can form a colony.

If you end up in the unfortunate situation of an Aphid infestation make sure that get it sorted out ASAP. Their colonies can grow extremely quickly and do serious damage to your garden if it is not treated properly and quickly.

If you have been working hard in your garden and been spending a lot of time planning and carefully working out the layout and design then you will know, just like me, how frustrating it can be to have a garden that all of a sudden gets plagued by bugs. I work in the pest control and landscaping industry and am daily dealing with clients who are sick and tired of working all year round to keep their gardens looking stunning, just to have all the hard work undone by unwanted insects.

This blog will contain some basic tips to help you to keep bugs out of your garden. If you want more information on pest control for specific insects, feel free to look at our comprehensive and detailed page on Pest Control Services as well as the areas that we operate in.

Types of Pest Control

There are three basic ways of doing pest control, each with their own type of results:

The first is natural pest control. This involves using the elements, animals and types of plants to help you get rid of any unwanted insects.

Secondly you get green pest control. This involves using products to both repel insects as well as the use of certain soils, organic fertilizers and balanced placement of plants and trees, oils and other natural or green products. You can learn more about green pest control by reading this page. This method is the least harmful to surrounding plants as well as the environment.

The third is by using chemical based pest removers. These are usually sprays, powders or small pellets that are used in strategic and well thought out places in the garden that will kill the insects. Most pest control companies offer only chemical solutions but with the current focus on global warming and gas emissions you will find more and more services also offering a green solution.

Tips for natural insect removal

If a garden is well designed it will attract specific insects and animals that will take care of the unwanted pests. Try these tips to go the natural route:

Place a birdfeeder and birdbath in your garden. This will attract birds that will take care of most of the unwanted insects. It will also add natural life to your garden.

Read up on plants that will attract other types of predators such as wasps and beetles. These predators will not only help you with insects but will also assist with pollination.

Think about a installing a water feature or small pond. The water will attract frogs that could take care of some insects. Just consult a professional before doing this as the water may attract some other unwanted insects too.

Take care of each plant individually. This way you can remove the bugs by hand. It will also ensure the health of your plants and it is a known fact that healthy plants are less prone to pests.

I hope that this will help. If not, you know how to get hold of me for any additional information.

One question we get asked sometimes is why do we need professional tree care services?

In a nutshell here is why:

Trees are often placed in landscapes and environments that they are not naturally found in.

Trees often grow to a size that is unmanageable for the space it inhabits

People often don’t select trees based on whether or not they will flourish in the particular setting but rather based on aesthetic concerns solely.

Trees can get sick, and require treatment.

This is the time of years when our focus on pest management begins to take a back seat to tree services and other landscape oriented services. We will be spending some time discussing what those services are and how we go about them.

Tree Care
Throughout the year we are called about tree trimming, tree diseases and other issues like tree removal. But more than any other time of year we get calls about trees. Among the different species we have been dealing with lately are Dutch Elm Trees. Dutch Elm Disease is a very common malady that still affects thousands of elm trees in the greater Bay Area. We have a complete plan of attack for this disease.

We got the usual calls about Sudden Oak Death of course as this is still a significant problem for many home owners and municipalities. We have been noticing that more and more cities and townships are taking it upon themselves to deal with this terrible disease that has destroyed many oak trees in the Bay Area and other places around the world.

We have been getting many calls about tree trimming, palo alto in particular has been the source for many calls. Also, for some reason Saratoga tree removals have bee up too.

We generally like to avoid tree removals at all costs and have been quite successful at taking care of trees that had been given up on. Often times with an integrated approach much can be accomplished.

Navigating the urban environment is what we deal with most often. Rarely do we ever get a call about a problem for a tree or pest that is not related or in some way caused by the urban context in which we live. There are several factors of the urban setting that significantly affect our work.

Proximity
The urban environment is fairly dense. People live and work in close proximity. Pest problems and issues with trees are never focused on a single property. Trees are affected by the hardscapes in which they exist. Pests are often able to flourish on one property, and the other properties around that property are affected.

Globalization
Ants, bees, spiders, the global nature of our environment are imported from all over the world. Trees are often placed on properties that they would never grow on naturally. Weed species are introduced that can ravage acres of land. Pathogens cross oceans and wreak havoc on California Oak Tree populations.

Got a call from a potential client the other day that was dealing with Elm Trees that were deteriorating and could not figure out why. Now having dealt with Elm Trees for many years we immediately knew the cause of the issue with certainty. Now, each tree is different so we of course went to examine the tree and diagnosis the problem. We were right. It was Dutch Elm Disease.

This tree disorder has been ravaging Elms in North America for almost 80 years. Millions of trees have been affected. Many urban areas used Elms to line the streets because they naturally do well in urban environments and not many trees are like this.

Many different treatments have been created but over the last 20 years and viable treatment for Dutch Elm Disease has been developed and used successfully for a good while. We have incorporated this methods into our own treatment and maintenance program for Elm trees.

If you think your Elm tree(s) could be suffering from this malady let us know, and we would be happy to come out, diagnose the problem and provide a quote, all at no charge.

Spiders are very common in all areas of the county. They vary in size from1/4″ to 1″, large legs make them appear a lot larger.

There are many types of spiders, some of the most popular being:

1. Brown Recluse Spiders
2. House Spiders
3. Black Widow

All of these spiders live in the same environment, be hot and humid areas.

To prevent spiders from entering you home there are many things you can do around your home. This is called Integrated Pest Management. First, take a look around your home and asses it, ask yourself some questions.

1. Are there wood piles around my home?
2. Are there a lot of cracks and crevasse?
3. Are trees touching my home?

You need to know that spiders are moisture driven, and you need to eliminate and moisture that is around your home.

Wood piles and woodchips should be removed from contact with your home. Grass clippings and leaf piles should be moved far away also. This is to ensure the spiders have no comfortable environment to live near your home.

It’s imperative that you keep your windows screened, and that you prevent attracting spiders into your home by lighting. Spiders are attracted to light and hang out around them. Keep your grass cut.
