Today in Atherton I finished a job on a large property that involved tree spraying (for insect and fungus control and fertilization as well), a garden spray (for the same reasons, exterminator services are very much part of what we do when required), an orchard spray (horticultural oil), pest management around the home, and weed abatement as well.

A number of our clients make use of the fact that unlike most pest control firms, we provide a wide variety of landscaping services. (With our partners, we even provide full service arboriculture and landscape design and installation services.)

Orchard spraying is an area of our special expertise. Orchards contain “domesticated” trees, which have been developed over the centuries specifically for bearing fruit. Hence, they have developed in a context that presumes some kind of spray maintenance. The most environmentally friendly products can be used, to eliminate risk of toxicity and the trees receive the protection from insects and fungus they need to bear the most fruit possible.

Also, we spray very large trees. When found in ornamental landscapes (such as around homes and office buildings), and often out of their native habitats, trees often develop a variety of problems. Although the possibilities are myriad, the most common problems generally fall into three main areas:

1. Insect Infestations

2. Fungus Problems (in the soil as well as in the tree)

3. Undernourishment

Hence, we recommend annual, biannual, or quarterly spray maintenance for most ornamental trees. Naturally, we always include protection against insects, fungus and we also apply fertilizer to the foliage.

Lastly, we offer this same kind of protection to all your ornamental plants when we do garden sprays. This is truly one of my favorite services to provide as it improves the visual appeal, health and beauty of any garden tremendously. The foliage stays green and healthy and free of the many diseases and insect problems that can diminish a garden’s beauty.

Also, bear in mind that we offer various kinds of weed abatement and removal. Whether you have poison oak that you need destroyed and removed, have weed growing in your lawn, or simply have a patch of dirt that would be bare were it not infested with weeds, we can help you.

Contact us today with any questions or to get your free estimate.

This week, I heard from a client in Palo Alto who was asking about radial trenching. Many people wonder about this service, and are curious as to the specific benefits. For more information, you may follow this link.

Radial trenching, in simpler terms, means to dig a series of ditches which radiate out from the trunk of the tree.

What are the benefits?

1. Aeration of the soil.

Trees need to breathe, as do other living things. When we penetrate the soil in a radial pattern, the air can reach the root system more easily. Also, soil compaction is relieved and this allows the roots of the tree to grow with less restriction.

2. Incorporation of soil augmentation.

When we add organic matter to the soil around a tree, it is important that the organic matter being introduced can actually reach the roots of the tree. So, we break up the soil with the trenches, allowing the new soil to integrate more fully with the old.

3. Irrigation of the root system.

Just as a tree needs air to breathe, so does it consume water from the soil. Un-aerated, compacted soil, does not allow water to penetrate into the tree’s root system. Thus, radial trenching allows for the right amount of water to actually be taken up into the tree through its roots

If you have any further questions or concerns about radial trenching, or are interested in our exterminator services, green exterminator services, tree service, or need tree trimming call 408 882 7535 or email us through our website: EvansPestManagement.com.

Gophers are among the most persistent hindrances to the beauty of landscaping. Here are some of the methods we use to control gophers.

1) The most direct way to control a gopher population is by trapping. Traps can be buried in the tunnels, catching and killing gophers that runs into them. However, this method is not always effective, as gophers do sometimes circumvent the traps.

2) Poison bait and poison gas can be placed in the gopher tunnels. These methods have varying degrees of effectiveness, but may not always be desirable options, given that some toxicity is involved. (But the environmental impact of this can be minimized by careful placement.)

3) Repellent is a highly effective method of control for infestations which are not severe or are under control. Various products can be sprayed on the ground in the areas which need to be protected from infestation. We often recommend this to clients who would like to prevent gopher infestation in the first place.

Although these creatures can cause distress to anyone who prizes his or her landscaping, their impact can be ameliorated by careful management practices.

If you are intested in our exterminator services, green exterminator services, tree service, or need tree trimming call 408 882 7535 or email us through our website: EvansPestManagement.com.
