Lately, in the course of running this business, I have been contemplating what it is that makes Evans Pest Management unique. What is it that makes us of service in a way that sets us apart from the myriad other pest control firms in the world? What is it about doing business with us that feels different, and is in fact different from whatever else is being offered in the marketplace today?

Hopefully, this kind of introspection on my part is beneficial to you as you make choices regarding pest management and regarding other choices in your life.

There are three ways in which we endeavor to provide a unique and (we like to think!) excellent service.

1. Expertise

This means that we understand and are well-trained to do whatever service we are providing you. Whether that means taking care of a tree that needs highly specific spray applications, spraying a yard carefully with a registered organic pesticide, or finding a green solution to a problem where it seems none existed, we are nothing if not competent.

2. Sustainable, Green Philosophy

An awareness of the preciousness of life and the preciousness of our natural world informs us every time we answer your call. We are here not only to address your problem in a way that satisfies you, but also in a way that shows respect for the beauty and purity of the earth. We have to live here too! We choose environmentally friendly, green solutions that are safe for the earth and thus safe for you. We enjoy developing a custom, “green” approach to your specific concerns.

3. Intelligent Customer Service

There is an intelligence of the heart that influences our every customer interaction. What is intelligence of the heart? It means, among other things that we interact with you as one human being to another! Not as one human being to a number, or one human being to a problem, or one human being to a dollar amount, but truly and actually as one human being to another human being! I don’t mind being emphatic about this, as it may be among the most important aspects of how we do business. We care about your specific concerns and interests. We actually like people, and like relating to people! We are people, you are people. We feel honored to be your people of choice anytime a pest management or tree care issue comes to your attention.

Of course, everything that grows is sustained by water. Trees in particular need just the right amount. Some species need more, some much less. And without proper watering, any tree can be expected to fail.

The first thing to consider as far as proper watering is concerned is how the placement of the tree and natural precipitation combine to provide the tree with whatever water it is receiving already. Your tree may not need any watering from your hose or irrigation system. It may in fact be receiving exactly as much water as it needs. However, it may be placed in such a way that it is not at all able to receive even the water it should be receiving from precipitation. In such a case, it may be necessary to intervene in order to ensure that the tree receives enough water to sustain it.

Here are some factors to consider regarding the water needs of a tree:

1. Is the soil usually dry?

2. Is the soil usually wet?

3. Are there barriers hidden in the soil which may block the flow of water to the root system?

4. Is the tree naturally water loving?

5. Is the tree naturally given to dry soil and dry climate?

6. Is it a particularly dry or wet season?

7. Is the tree placed close to an irrigation system that may be unintentionally providing it more water than it needs?

You can rely upon us to consider these and a number of other factors when we assess your tree and its need for water. Also, we are equipped both to water trees which require extra water, and to deliver that water deep into the root system. Furthermore, we are happy to make suggestions about how you can better water your trees yourself if you are so inclined.

You may call us or email us today to discuss the health of your trees. We look forward to bringing you our expertise and understanding, with respect to watering and any other issues which may concern your trees. 408-882-7535. EvansPestManagement@gmail.com

Continuing our discussion of tree care in urban settings, we come to perhaps the least understood aspect. Soil management with respect to trees is essentially the management of anything that may be having an influence on the root system of a tree. Soil may be too hard, too compressed, or without minerals necessary for tree health, besides a wide range of other issues.

One of the simplest ways to better understand the soil composition around a particular specimen is to take a soil sample and have it scientifically analyzed. This can provide extensive data regarding pathogens which may be in the soil, and also can be used to determine what elements should be added to the soil to promote tree health.

Two major problems which often go hand in hand are soil compaction and a lack of oxygen in the soil. This can be addressed by removing weight which may be compressing the soil (such as cement or rocks) and also by treating the soil with an air spade or other device to bring more oxygen to the root system of the tree.

When you give us a call at 408-882-7535 or email us at EvansPestManagement@gmail.com, we will be happy to support your trees by facilitating the best possible soil.

As we consider this often overlooked area of tree care, I invite you to bring to mind the last tree you can remember seeing. Is the foliage robust and a healthy green? Are the limbs balanced, with woody tissue and leaves in the proper proportion? Is the trunk strong and sound? The answers to these and other questions tell us much about the kind and quantity of nutritional support a tree may or may not need.

When we fertilize trees, we take a wide variety of concerns into account. But, there are certain basic ingredients in any good fertilizer. These are generally agreed upon and are standardized across the industry. However, there are exceptions to every rule. It is very important that such exceptional cases are noted and treated as such.

For example, it is customary to fertilize primarily with a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen. But there are cases when that would be injurious to the health of the tree. I have encountered such cases myself. In one particular example involving a very large and beautiful oak tree, another arborist had suggested a huge amount of high nitrogen fertilizer. Had the owner of the tree proceeded without consulting me, this would almost certainly have killed the tree because of certain extenuating circumstances which strongly counter indicated nitrogen fertilizer in that case.

Also, the method of delivery of fertilizer can be as important as the amount and kind of fertilizer applied. If it’s misapplied it may not be effective at all. We are able to use a variety of application techniques (including deep root fertilization, foliar application, soil drench and others) to ensure that the needed nutrients are in fact delivered such that the tree can use them.

Though it’s not reasonable to include the wide range of scenarios that we encounter professionally in this short article, let it suffice to say that we are equipped to both assess and fertilize effectively in virtually any case, with any kind of tree.

Call us at 408-882-7535 or email us at EvansPestManagement@gmail.com to find out more about how we can support your trees with fertilization.

When you hear the phrase “tree trimming,” what comes to mind? Pruning shears in your hands as you snip away at the small limbs of a fruit tree? Bucket trucks parked in the street blocking traffic as large branches of street trees are cut away from power lines? Or perhaps you picture one of the trees on your property as you wonder when you last had it trimmed, or how soon you should have it trimmed again?

Whatever sizes and varieties of trees you have on your property, it is wise for you to have them professionally trimmed on an annual basis. There are many reasons to do this including: better production and longevity for fruit trees, improved aesthetics, safety and prevention of tree failure by balancing the canopies, and improved vitality. All trimming should be done to the highest industry standards as set by ANSI, and performed and supervised by arborists.

Many tree health problems can be avoided by simply maintaining an annual trim schedule. Your trees will grow in the healthiest, safest and most beautiful way possible. Also, you will save money on the cost of removing failed trees. You will retain peace of mind, knowing that your trees are growing safely, without posing a danger to life or property.

You may call us today to schedule an inspection of the trees on your property, and to schedule trimming service. We take pleasure in providing the highest quality tree trimming available, at a reasonable price. Call us at 408-882-7535 or email at EvansPestManagement@gmail.com.

Tree care in urban environments is critical to maintaining the health of trees, and consists of a handful of processes that should be professionally managed. Among these are inspection, trimming, fertilization, soil and water management, and pest control.

Today we will discuss the nature and function of arborist inspections.

The qualified arborist is a tree professional who understand the many species of trees that may be used in landscaping, and the various factors that relate to their health.

An arborist should inspect all trees on a given site annually at minimum in order to monitor the vitality and condition of each specimen. This includes examining the foliage, branches, trunk, root system and soil. Each part of a tree tells its own story. The story may include a need for nutritional support, more or less water, balancing the canopy, or a wide variety of other issues. Whether the tree is in need of any specific care or intervention or not, the regular attention of an arborist allows the tree to receive whatever it may need to keep the tree in the best health possible. Inspections are about preventing disease and failure and are a very inexpensive measure compared to what may be necessary if a tree has become sick or troubled due to a lack of care and attention.

Call us today if you would like to schedule an arborist inspection.

One of the services we offer is fertilization. It’s not just any fertilization, or just any fertilizer either! What we offer is nothing less than the very best fertilizing processes available, for a wide variety of applications. We use the highest quality, handmade, water soluble fertilizers available. And, we apply them either by deep root injection or foliar application with a power spray. These are not techniques that a typical property owner or operator can perform because of the need for specialized equipment costing tens of thousands of dollars. Furthermore, the fertilizers we use simply can’t be found at your local home and garden center.

How can you tell that a plant, tree, or perhaps your lawn needs to be fertilized? You might see yellowing (chlorotic) foliage on trees and plants. You might notice that your lawn is not bright green, but rather a light green or a dull green. The woody tissues of a large tree might be showing signs of weakness or infestation. Plant life often very readily shows its need for nutrients. But there is no reason to wait until the plants are showing such a need! Consider letting us provide you with a regular plan to keep your garden fed all year.

We can provide a solution specific to the needs of your landscape. Given that artificial (manmade) landscapes are simply not naturally occurring, they need the attention of professional care to look their best. For the discerning property owner, our services in the realm of fertilization are the best on the market. We can analyze your specific situation, take the soil and choice of plant life into account, and make an application-ideally on an on-going basis-to feed exactly the nutrients that are required in just the right amounts.

Let us discuss fertilizing your landscape as soon as you are ready to have the best looking yard possible.

“It’s not that easy bein’ green. . .” as Kermit the frog (and later Frank Sinatra) would sing. Though this website is not about singing or songs, the phrase remains a truism, even in the business of pest management and tree care.

What does it mean to provide a green pest control service? How are we different that a company than does not provide green solutions? What makes us unique? How can we honestly claim to be a “green” company when so very many people pass the word around, without bothering to define what it means?

First of all being green means being friendly to the earth, this beautiful green planet where we all live together. The earth has given us many substances in the form of minerals and plants. These we can use to control and manage various pests. Whether we are concerned with ants, spiders, wasps, or any of a variety of fungi, there is very likely a natural product-a product which was taken from the earth-which we can use to obtain control.

Second, it means that we are conservative with our measures. Will one application suffice to gain and maintain control? Then we won’t be selling you a monthly service. Is it possible that by sanitation measures alone, we can avoid the need for spraying entirely? Then we won’t be spraying. Can we treat only a limited area in order to effectively stop a problem which is not yet widespread? Then we will not be making an application over your entire property.

Third, it means that we are sensitive to your specific needs and concerns. Do you have pets? We can still provide you the control you need, while keeping them safe. Are you concerned about the safety of your children or an infant? You can count on us for an approach that is as effective as it is safe. Are you determined to completely avoid the use of any pesticide whatsoever? Very likely, we can still find a way to manage your pest problem.

We are in the business of taking care of people, and also taking care of the earth which all human beings share.

Feel free to call us at 408-882-7535 or send us an email at evanspestmanagement@gmail.com. We would be delighted to serve you with a truly green solution.
