Pitch canker is a tree disease that attacks conifers, which is caused by a fungus: Fusarium subglutinans. Initially the fungus infects the tips of the branches which is identified by browning and wilting of the needles. Cankers, sores on the tree, are also identifying elements of this disease.

If a pine tree is suffering from pitch canker, it is particularly affected by bark beetles. Pitch canker when combined with bark beetles can be fatal for pines. If your pine tree is being affected by either of these problems, the bark beetles or the pitch canker, give us a call so we can review treatment options. The sooner this is caught and treated the better.

This is one of those cases where pest control and tree care are intertwined. Treating both is critical, and often, regular tree pest control can prevent a serious outbreak of fungus diseases.

Species affected in California:

  • Monterey pine (Pinus radiata) and
  • Bishop pine (P. muricata)
