Hello, my name is Brian H and I am from JP McHale Pest Management, located in New York. I hope you enjoy our guest post.

Spiders are very common in all areas of the county. They vary in size from1/4″ to 1″, large legs make them appear a lot larger.

There are many types of spiders, some of the most popular being:

1. Brown Recluse Spiders
2. House Spiders
3. Black Widow

All of these spiders live in the same environment, be hot and humid areas.

To prevent spiders from entering you home there are many things you can do around your home. This is called Integrated Pest Management. First, take a look around your home and asses it, ask yourself some questions.

1. Are there wood piles around my home?
2. Are there a lot of cracks and crevasse?
3. Are trees touching my home?

You need to know that spiders are moisture driven, and you need to eliminate and moisture that is around your home.

Wood piles and woodchips should be removed from contact with your home. Grass clippings and leaf piles should be moved far away also. This is to ensure the spiders have no comfortable environment to live near your home.

It’s imperative that you keep your windows screened, and that you prevent attracting spiders into your home by lighting. Spiders are attracted to light and hang out around them. Keep your grass cut.

Spider control is an issue year round in the Bay Area, but can be particularly important during rainy weather. Three recent experiences our customers have had illustrate this dramatically.

In all three cases, a spider bite was the reason that we received the calls for Spider pest control service.

First, a dog was bitten while playing in the yard. This beautiful, healthy dog was very nearly killed by one spider bite. The vet bills cost the dog’s distraught owners about twenty-five times the cost of one pest control service. Of course, they were more than willing to spend the money to save the life of their dog. But wouldn’t it have been preferable if they had thought to hire regular pest management around the house and in the yard of their newly built, 4,000 square foot, custom home in Campbell?

Second, a woman with a 6,000 square foot home on two acres in Monte Sereno was bitten by a spider as she lay face up in bed. The bite was not much more painful than a bee sting, and her face was only swollen for about a week. Although the potency of this spider bite was relatively mild, it too prompted her to call us for an extensive spider treatment. She has not had a spider problem since we sprayed, yet her bite could likely have been prevented by regular spray maintenance.

The 3rd and most recent instance is by far the most disturbing. Please, take note! The bite also occured while the victim was lying in bed. This particular bite caused no more than a small red mark to begin with, and the pain at the time of the bite was not great. However, within the weeks following the initial bite, the skin became necrotic, and the bite began to develop an unsightly red, black and blue wound spreading out in rings from the punture in the middle. Also, the victim also began to experience:

Severe pain at the bite site

Head and body aches and pains

Severe itching

Nausea

Vomiting

Fever

Sadly, three physicians misdiagnosed the condition as something other than a spider bite. (California doctors in metropolitan areas are notoriously poor at diagnosing and treating spider bites. Unfortunately, this can lead to severe infections, tissue damage and the need for surgery in extreme cases.)

The victim called us shortly after she was bitten, and we guided her to seek treatment from a doctor with a track record of sucessfully diagnosing and treating spider bites. Although she lives in Cupertino, CA, near San Jose, and sought treatment from physicians in Cupertino, Palo Alto and Menlo Park, she eventually contacted a doctor in Philadelphia who had treated hundreds of spider bites. Palo Alto Pest Control He prescribed a specific combination of medications that none of the patient’s Bay Area doctors had even considered. (When questioned later, these local physicians admitted that they had not treated or knowingly diagnosed even ONE spider bite in their careers!) Thankfully, subsequent to correct diagnosis and treatment, the bite healed completely within days. As the bite was on the patient’s neck and quite unsightly, she was very grateful that it healed properly. She claims that the only reason she sought treatment for (what her west coast doctors refused to believe was) a spider bite was our insistent suggestion. (Pest control operators may actually be more experienced with spider bites than some doctors!) Although poisinous spider bites may not be extremely common, they must be properly treated when they do occur, or severe injury, illness or even death may result.

Needless to say, we performed a thorough spider treatment, and have done so for her ever since.

In all three of these cases, it is unlikely that any bites would have occurred if the customers had called us for regular service before they were bitten. There is no need to wait for a bite to occur. Schedule regular service to be protected against spider infestation and other pests including ants.

Here are some of the common signs of spider problems:

Shrubs and trees, especially near structures

Dusty corners

Visible cobwebs

Undisturbed storage, such as woodpiles

Rain, which drives spiders into dwellings

Cold weather, for the same reason as above

Warm weather, during which most spiders hatch
